Mission Music

Creating Music Rooms for Underprivileged Students

I am Diya Bubber, a 16-year-old student studying at Woodstock School in Mussoorie. I have initiated a community project called Mission Music, with the primary goal of creating music rooms in schools for underprivileged students. Through masterclasses, presentations, and instrument donations, I aim to empower these students by providing them access to creative avenues and exposure to different genres of music.

the why

Main Objective

The main objective of Mission Music is to create music rooms in schools, specifically targeting underprivileged students in the 6th and 7th grades. By conducting masterclass sessions, explaining various music genres, and facilitating instrument selection, I intend to provide these students with opportunities to learn and create music.

How we do it

Project Execution

I conducted interactive masterclass sessions to introduce the students to different genres of music, with a specific focus on Bollywood and Hollywood pop music.

Masterclass Sessions

After the masterclass sessions, I conducted a survey among the students to determine their preferences for musical instruments. Through discussions and guidance, I helped the children choose the instruments they would like to learn.

Survey and Instrument Selection

To make this project a reality, I raised funds to acquire the necessary musical instruments for the targeted schools. The instruments were donated and used to establish dedicated music rooms where students could practice and develop their musical talents.

topics

During these sessions, I will cover the following topics:

Origins of the genres

Bollywood music, originating in the early 20th century from the Indian film industry, blends traditional, classical, folk, and contemporary styles. Hollywood pop music, emerging mid-20th century in the U.S., evolved from rock, rhythm and blues, and other genres, known for its catchy melodies and wide appeal, influencing global trends and youth culture.

History of Artists

Bollywood icons include Lata Mangeshkar, the "Nightingale of India," and composer A.R. Rahman, known for his international accolades. Hollywood pop legends feature Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop," and Madonna, the "Queen of Pop," both of whom have left lasting impacts on music and culture.

Musical Instruments Used

Bollywood music commonly features the tabla, sitar, and harmonium, providing rhythmic and melodic richness. Hollywood pop music relies heavily on the electric guitar, synthesizer, and drum kit to create its distinctive sound.

Meaning and Impact of Lyrics

Bollywood lyrics often explore love, heartbreak, and social issues, resonating deeply with audiences. Pop lyrics typically address love, relationships, and empowerment, influencing cultural narratives and connecting personally with listeners.

Performance of a Song as an Example

For Bollywood, A.R. Rahman's "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire is notable for its energetic rhythm and inspirational lyrics. In Hollywood pop, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" stands out for its innovative production, iconic music video, and blend of pop, rock, and funk elements.
